i heard from my friend that it's illegal... is this true?

No, it's not. If it's a regular, old fashioned key, you can make it at a lot of places, where they make keys.
If it's one of newer "fancy" electronic keys, you have to go to an auto dealer.

You can make all the copies you want of anything you own.

However, there has been a lot of discussion of car dealerships keeping copies of your keys when they sell you a used vehicle so that if they have to repossess it they can get it quicker. Some say that is illegal.

Tell your "friend" they're full of s**t! You can make as many copies of your keys as you like. In fact it is a good idea to conceal a spare key somewhere on the outside of your car in case you loose your keys, or lock them inside.

It is not illegal to copy YOUR car keys. Computer chip (transponder) keys require proof of ownership from locksmiths and dealers to copy.

Why would it be illegal? Its your car and your keys.

If people didn't have spare keys and locked themselves out of the car, how would they ever be able to drive again?
