i have a car and only need to travel about 7 miles to work and school, do i need to pay for insurance to legally drive???

Yes.
Even though it is only 7 miles, what happens if you get in an accident? What if it is your fault? Do you want to pay your car repairs? the other person's car repairs? their medical bills? What if they sue you for pain and suffering?
Be smart, don't drive without insurance. Talk to a local independent insurance agent... they can shop you around to get you good quotes (they work with lots of companies, not just one like the online sites, progressive or geico).
You can take an approved defensive driving class and save 10 percent off your bill.
And since you drive such a short distance - your bill will be cheaper than those who drive longer distances on a regular basis. |

Yes, NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law 319.3 makes in a misdemeanor to drive in New York without insurance. Your license will be suspended within 30 days and if you are in an accident, you can be personally held responsible for damages and injuries sustained to the other person, through personal payments, liens and repossession of your car, house and personal assets. Since 80% of accidents occur within 10 miles of home, you are running a pretty big risk. |
