Is it illegal to have a Nevada license and your vehicle registered and insured in another state?

Well, by law in Nevada, you have 30 days from the date you moved here to get your Nevada license. As for the vehicle, it has to have Nevada insurance and registration on it. The good thing is that if you get pulled over you can play dumb and say you just moved here and didn't know any better and 99.9% of the time they will let you off with a warning. But then you are on their radar and will have to go and get those things done within 30 days. When we moved here from NY I had one month left of my NY insurance and I was going to just renew it and found out that I couldn't. You could probably get away with the registration and insurance if you maintained a story that 'you just brought the car out here'... licenses are not linked necessarily to the car and insurance. But again, once on the radar you will have to switch it.
Have you checked to see what it would cost you here? It might be the same or cheaper for you, then you don't have to sweat it. :)

If you are living in Nevada, and the car is staying in Nevada on a long-term basis, then it needs to be registered and insured in Nevada. Ownership is irrelevant.

you need to keep proof in the car that the car is owned by your dad in Illinois.

It is legal for you to get a Nevada DL.

I think that you have to meet the Illinois emissions requirements, since that is where taxes on the car are paid. but it is always possible that Nevada has some unique law..

what is illegal is for you to live/work in Nevada, own the car, but register it in another state, so that your taxes are lower or because the other state has lower emissions standards, stc.

I think if you have to have a valid license for the state you live in. If you have taken up residency in a certain state,say N.Y, I believe you need a current license.

you must get an emissions check when renewing your tags. You are suppose to render those tags to the DMV and get a Nevada driver's license in a matter of days. I hope you don't get stopped. You will get a ticket if you have a nevada driver's license. Better yet, just call the DMV in Nevada and ask them to know for sure. I believe i am on the money with this. I am in Nevada. and have a family member who works for
DMV.

As long as it is your dad that owns the vehicle, then chances are you will be fine as long as you are driving it with his permission. It's only if ownership changes to you that you will need to have it registered in Nevada. Most states give you a grace period of 30 days to get the registration changed.
