I did the same thing I didn't know til afterwards, BUT i do suggest that you keep the car off the road and get it insured and taxed ASAP.
I also recommend contacting DVLA:

technically no. It is also illegal not to show a tax disk in your windscreen even if you have bought one and have it in your glovebox. It has to be in view. It depends on the mood of the policeman who stops you at the time. Most would be lenient but it also depends what attracted him to you in the first place. |

It is illegal but as long as you can prove the car belongs to you if you are stopped on the way home, which you should be able to as you have just bought the car so therefor should have the paper work needed, you will be given 7 days to produce proof of Tax at your local police station.
Just don't take the p&*s by driving around for weeks thinking you'll get it taxed IF and when you get pulled. Everything is on computors now, them bloody new camaras can tell a waiting police officer if you cars taxed, MOTed and insured without pulling you over. |

Good answers, it is illegal. Keep a bill of sale while you drive it home and smile if you are stopped. |

It is illegal under section 29 of the road traffic act, you could have your car impounded, and have to pay £200 for its release |

It's illegal, but when you get a receipt get the seller to put the time of the purchase and that will help explain it to police if you got stopped taking it home, it also covers the seller in case you bought it and went through a speed camera. |

assuming you just bought the car and the vendor kept the disc? (to get a refund) - will be ok in that case as the car is still taxed.... otherwise- don't think so. |
