Is it ok to take my car to a different body shop than the one the insurance company is paying me for?

A valet guy backed into my car & dented the bumper. Their insurance asked me to get two estimates. I did & they are cutting me a check. My co-workers father owns a body shop & he said can do it for less. Is it ok (illegal) to get the repair done for less & keep the difference?

yes, but it is unethical.

If they're cutting the check to you, then you can do what you want with it. It's kind of odd, though. Typically the insurance company pays the body shop directly. At least it did in my experience.

You can take it to whomever you wish as long as the check is made out to you alone and not the other body shop.
