NO...you cannot insure something you do not own. If you find an agent that will do it, the policy can be fought by the insurance company as void if you make a claim and they will probably win.

I worked for a major UK insurance company until a month ago and we would not allow you to insure a car if you were not the owner and registered keeper of that vehicle because you would have no financial interest in the vehicle and because there may be a dispute as to who would receive any pay out in the event of a claim.

However, the exception to this rule was if the car was owned by a partner/wife of the proposer or if the car was a lease or company car.

depending on your exact situation, it may well be possible.

In the UK there can be a difference between the legal owner and the registered keeper. All those cars on hp are owned by the finance company until it's paid off, but they're insured by the registered keeper. I bought my daughter car, I technically owned it but she was the keeper and she took out the insurance.

Depends on insurance company for example Tesco insurance you have to be registered keeper to be declared main driver (policy holder)

I once had friends move to California from another state.They brought their truck. I asked my insurance agent to write a policy for them. She did that with no problem. I paid the bill.

Yes you should be able to. Most of the insurance is for the 3rd party cover, so not owning it is not an issue. You would have to show a reason why you need cover. Consult a real broker, don't bother with on-line.

Actually it depends on your location...in some other countries you can but in others like UK you cant...

but i suggest you can make a search and collect quotes if it offers in your location..

It is possible but I don't know why you would want to insure someone elses car. If you are the owner of the car all you need to do is contact the DMV and have them varify the information they have in the computer with what you have for an insurance agency. This is how the Police know if you have insurance or not. Most states require that you have proof of insurance prior to registration on the car. the insurance company will also send the information to the DMV updating their system on the current insurance status.
