Is it worth making a small claim on my car insurance for a headlight?
Find answers to your legal question.

Is it worth making a small claim on my car insurance for a headlight?

I have a protected no claims bonus. So if I claim it won't affect my ncd at all ( I assume). I'm aware I can claim with my insurance (more than) I can claim as many times as I like, the protection bonus and my ncd won't be affected. However if I were to really need to make a big claim, would my previous little claim affect it? Is there a time period my bonus protection lasts for, in other words, does each calendar year with my insurance start afresh? My headlight was smashed by a flying stone and it will cost me £140 to put right - shall I make a claim which will cost me nothing or will I pay for it in the long run with future car insurance policies?

Panse. So I have to pay the excess even on the protected bonus?

Yes you do still pay the excess on a protected policy and your premium would probably go up at renewal

WHO am i?
if you do you must pay the excess anyway.

Hi
There is quite a little confusion and surprise at times with insurance , and if they can find a way to make you pay they will.

OK you most likely have an excess on your policy and you will have to pay that if you do claim , second yes your NCB may be protected but as you know when you go to renew one of the questions is "have you had any claims in the last 12 months" and you will have to answer yes to this ,

Then up go your premiums for that year and still you have protected NCB !

Cant win can we ???????

Hope this helps

Ps shop around for your headlight lots of autospares shops do aftermarkets ones at good prices >

No, this is what Fully comp is for. The stone wasn't your fault. The only thing you should do is check with your insurer whether you should declare this if you change insurer next year.

It depends on your insurance company and the amount of deductible. If your deductible is £140 or more it would be pointless.

Please punctuate properly folks.
Find a headlight on ebay or from a specialist breaker for your car maker. Fit it yourself. It isn't hard. Most headlights are available for around 40pounds.

Protected no claims or not the cost of the headlamp is likely to be less than your excess anyway. So you'd still end up paying for the headlamp with no one at fault to recover the cost from.

Also, if you haven't already, read the small print. Protected no claims isn't always as protected as we might think. It does not guarantee your premiums will not go up as a result of a claim.

For automobile insurance the quick way to get a very good rate is do a policy comparison on car policies. Make sure that you pick similar options with the same limits, car make, location, etc so that all things are an accurate comparison.

What I most often recommend is an internet comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have lots of insurers and will give many quotes on auto insurance polices.

Do you have to pay excess on your policy???if so how is the excess?is it more than the cost of h/light?if you can answer these questions and assuming the answer is yes then it is not worth claiming on your insurance. hope it helps

I wouldn't claim. You will have to pay an excess (it will state on your insurance documents how much compulsery excess you will have to pay for your age and how much volunteree excess you pay if any), also, protected ncd usually have a clause of only allowing 2 claims per year protected. Also, if you make a fault claim within a policy year, you have to see the insurance through to expiry. If you want to cancel the policy prior to renewal with a fault claim, you have to pay the full annual insurance premium. I would get it done privately without involving your insurance company. Hope this helps. Good luck.
