Yes. Ive driven on mine there, Both my in-laws who have retired to Bangalore drive on there's. If your thinking of driving there you obviously know its utter chaos. Good luck mate.

no...we holiday in India & my husband applied for an International driving licence which lasts a year. if my memory serves me right ... he applied for it through the RAC (the breakdown people) & he got the form on-line.

whatever you do if you drive in India...make sure you have the correct licence & insurance...honestly - it's great fun...but pretty hair raising!! the roads are chaos!!

insane_mad_maniak
having a licence and actually being able to drive with confidence in all the chaos is a completely diffrent thing. i dont think you will be asked to produce a driving licence at any point. but driving licences are usually valid for a few months in other countrys.

I'm not sure if it is but I got back a few months ago on a five month trip and drove around (carefully as I was uninsured). get your relatives (i'm assuming you have some there) to find out. If not if you get caught by police and they give any excuse to arrest you, give them Rs50/- or whatever the going rate is and be on your way. As for insurance many don't have it and many do its something worth enquiring about. I also went goa where you can rent a car, one of the fewest places that allows you to rent without driver, and although I didn't hire or drive the bike we rented (my cousin did all that) the guy took my license for id and security. and I also saw loads of foreigners driving there so maybe it can be assumed that you can.

drive anyway but rather than use the proper rules use the common street laws and common sense. I got caught up in the middle of a cross road and was stuck for a while with cars behind me to the front and those traveling to the east and to the west of me. I just used mu common sense to squeeze my way out by slowly moving in and out of gaps and its just down to understanding between you and the other road users. obviously if the other guy is in a hurry or arrogant let him pass otherwise just weave and edge yourself out of the traffic if you get stuck.

oh and here in the west you could probably get away with not observing and leaving it to other drivers for road safety but there everyones has a hand in it and you need to observe constantly. On one of my first goes I got the front wheel stuck in a massive pot hole which was wide and deep (one of the ones that goes down into the sewage down below). and watch out for animals roaming the streets and always be ready to horn and flash.

last pointer, hiring a car with a driver or if you have a car there already just hiring a driver is very very cheep and convenient. I only drove to places where I knew the roads. I requested my cousins to have a go else where but was glad to have a driver as they know all the roads properly. And of course driving there is not for the person who is not too confident.

good luck.

I still love Jose UC bluea
don't drive in india you will have a nervous breakdown - hire a driver
for the day if you need a car all day - negotiate - really cheap or
get a taxi or tuk tuk check price 1st- if you hire a car you may not be insured,
and are you used to avoiding elephants cars turning without signalling
six on a scooter - massive lorries and buses cows in the road
this is not being funny - i am serious. don't do it.
if you are going to live there well you can take the driving test
apparently from what friends (indian) have told me its quite basic.
otherwise sit back and enjoy.
