Is my mother lying, bending the truth or what?

I brought up moving out today and we were talking about budget and she said my car insurance would go up because if I moved then I couldn't be on their "plan" legally or something. The car is under my dad's name because it's cheaper then having it in my name. My mom jokes like she wants me to move out but I know if I left she would be sad so this is why I'm not sure if she's is lying or bending the truth to keep me to stay home. So if anyone knows the general rules of car insurance, because my parents never tell me anything, that would be great.

She's telling the truth. You will pay much more on your own than now. When you reach 25 and/or marry, the rates will go down

She's neither lying nor bending the truth. She is absolutely right. You can't be on their plan if you don't live at the same address, and if you get insurance on your own it will cost more.

well it would be cheaper for you to be under their insurance because its a multiple car policy, usually most companies if you move out you can't be under their policy anymore so it would be more for you, just have to get your dad to call and see, some companies will only let you stay on the policy until a certain age or it ca be at any age as long as your living with them or can be as long as your in school, just depends on the company

your mom is not lying. technically if you move you are "supposed" to register your vehicle to your new address and then you would have to get your own insurance at that point in time. on the other hand they have to find out you've moved and prove that you no longer reside there. I haven't lived at home for years but my licence is still registered under my parents house. it saves money on insurance because they live in the country

My daughter's car registration lists me and her as co-owners. That way we can get a multi-car discount on the insurance, and she pays me her portion of it. Since my name is listed first, the license plates expire on my birthday.

Once you move out you can no longer be on your parents insurance policy. Therefore your insurance will go up. The car is in your fathers name so your insurance policy will be under both his name and your name because as far as the insurance company is concerned the car is his.

Ignore Robert R, he lies like a sidewalk and spams like a tin of meat. He claims to have 2 daughters, 17 and 18, in one answer. In another he has a son and a daughter, and in another he has 1 daughter that is 20. He has a son who totalled 2 cars in a year. He has a 17 year old daughter. He has a daughter that had an accident. Hi Jufty,

I would shop around and get your own policy. Should not be over $75 a month. It will save you from dealing with your parents and start building your credit.

My daughters (17&18) are on there own policies.

It is an offence for your father to be shown as main user/owner, when he isn't! It may be cheaper but, illegal!

i've heard that you can put your car under another address that you've lived at.
