There are two basic types of car insurance.

The first one is liability, which most states require you to have. This is the insurance that pays for damages caused to other people's bodies and property. This is based on the driver. New drivers, younger drivers, and drivers with accidents or tickets pay more.

The second insurance is collision/comprehensive. I don't know of a state that requires this insurance, but if you finance your car, then the finance company requires you to have this. This is the insurance that pays for damages to your car in the event of accident or theft. While they may factor in the driver, this insurance is based on the value of the car, and the likelihood of it being stolen.

I'm sure there are insurance survey's and studies done on the topic.. but nothing I've ever stumbled across. Insurance companies use a prcing 'matrix' to determine what specific rate applies for what specific coverage for each specific user. If you're inexperienced, have a lapse in coverage, have accidents or moving violations.. these are typically things companies will look for when drawing up a quote for you.

With respect to the car, the rubrics determining costs for a specific car can have just as much of an impact. Whether your choose to drive a 2002 Camaro or a 2006 Chevy Impala, your insurance rates may not vary by all that much. What matters more to the insurance companies are the saftey ratings, costs of repair, and the status of vehicle ownership. If you buy a car outright, you're going to pay less than if you are financing or leasing the car.

Thats the realm of my expertise.. sorry I couldn't help more.

Mostly the person driving it and the make and model of the car; ei does that type of car get into a lot of accidents and such. The faster the car the higher the insurance. Your driving record affects most of it.

the person driving it

All what the others said. PLUS the Safety rating of the vehicle. My Insurance just went up 100 for a year because the Lancer's rating went down.

Both, it depends usually on gender, driving record, and marital status. However the type of car matters too, you will pay much more for coverage of a car that gets stolen frequently and you will pay more for coverage if your car if it is a car that gets more claims filed, such as a sports car/turbo model etc.

2 more factors that can change it too. 1. how far you drive to work. 2. how many miles a year do you drive.

some companies give multi car discounts, good student discounts, non-smoker discounts (smokers have a higher collision rate), and you could possibly get a discount for taking a driver safety course.

shop around-there are vast differences in premium.

Answering your question, it is changed more by the person driving it.

age and condition of the car, along with your driving record

Your car insurance is affected by your age, type of car, size of engine, convertible...
Just ask your agent :-)

i would say by both. If you are under 25 your insurance is going to be higher. It also depends on what kind of car and what year it is, newer cars cost more than older ones to insure and sports cars and suvs will cost more than a sedan. Your credit, depending on whether it is good or bad has an impact on your insurance as well.

No one has mentioned zip code. Believe it or not your zip code has a lot to do with your rate. Your credit rating is also taken into consideration with some agencies.
