where I live you must report to the Police any motor accident with more than $500 damage within 24 hours.
my insurance policy states that I must report the accident to my insurer as soon as reasonably possible.
there is another clause which states that if I withhold information they later consider relevant they may void my cover. that perhaps could apply if I fail to report an accident. |

i doubt if an official time limit exists,it is usually with in the first day

Not only is there a limit but also a restriction! If you don't file a report within a certain time frame most carriers now a days refuse to pay the claim! Varies state by state due to each states regulations but here on the east coast it's pretty much common practice! |

yes in some places, if you do report one much later nobody is going to believe you, they will at least wonder why you took so long, just too suspicious |

The one year limit is the period of time in which you can sue (statute of limitations), but most states require an accident be reported within a deadline. In my state I believe it is two weeks. |
