Other than smoke or the presence of ash is there ANY other way that the car rental company can tell that someone smoked in their car? There was a big electrical storm the other day with a tornado warning and I pulled under a bridge to wait it out. I was nervous so I smoked a cigarette and had window open and arm our the window. I don't want to pay the $75.00 smoking fee, so if someone can tell me if there's any other way they can tell, I'd appreciate it. I fabreezed the carpets and wiped the ash off the door off.

That's exactly what we did last year with an 8-day rental and 2 smokers--vacuuming and Febreeze, and nobody said anything about smoking when we turned it in. |

I think you're fine. The only way they can tell, save physical evidence of ashes, etc., is the smell. You only smoked one, out the window, and febreezed it after. |

Car rental companies are usually interested in the car being able to be rented again. The only method of detecting if someone smoked is a customer complaint or obvious signs. Be sure to air out the vehicle well (leave windows cracked overnight). Do a through job of deodoraizing the car (be sure to hit the headliner with febreeze, thats where most of your smoke smell will linger). If anything is detected it will be your word against theirs, and you can just simply blame it on a previous driver.
