well my father in law bought my husband and i and 96 sunfire gt but the guy never gave us the title...and we been calling him to get it...im thinking he just sold it with no title at all...so we're stuck...i really need a title for this car...so does anyone know how to get another title for a car or a way??

The burden for furnishing the title is on the seller. He should have furnished a title when your FIL handed him the money for the car. Your FIL should have never paid for a car without a title. The seller may not have even owned the car. It could be stolen. Go back to the seller and insist on a valid title for the car and if he can't or won't furnish one get the money back |

You can get a Duplicate Title with DMV Form REG 227, but you need the LAST OWNERS SIGNATURE on it and his info. He fills out the front, you fill out the back. You'll walk away with a registration with your name on it, but the title comes in the mail (CA anyway) in about 2 weeks. The form can be down loaded off the internet at dmv.ca.gov
If the car was not paid off, and there's still a loan on it, then the lender has the Title. You can find that out at the DMV or AAA Auto Club.
Go in with the VIN # and ask if it's there's a loan on it. They won't tell you who's name is on the title, as that's confidential, but they can tell you if there's a lien on it.
Will it pass smog? In Calif, you need a smog check to sell a car. And the odometer needs to be recorded on the form. |
