Is there a way to check with the DMV how many points you have on your license?

My mom is being ridiculous. I crashed my car about 6 months ago and her continuous argument for why I can't get a car is that I have too many points on my license and it will run up our insurance too much. I had my accident and I also had a seatbelt violation a long time ago before I had my license, but I am not sure if that has worn off or if it even put points on my license in the first place. Is there a way I can find out?

By the way, I turned 18 about 4 months ago.

There are actually two point systems involved.

The first is one used by the state, in which points are assessed against a motorist for an infraction - not wearing a seatbelt, DUI, careless driving, etc. - and which are used to assess penalties. These are the ones that will get your license suspended if you accumulate too many of them.

The second is one used by insurance companies. It's somewhat similar to the systems used by states, but with a different purpose: insurability, or how high a risk you represent. Too many insurance points, and there is the possibility no one will insure you.

As other respondents have indicated, you can get a copy of your driving record (called an "abstract") by going to the DMV and paying a nominal fee for a period going back a certain number of years. This will detail any points you've received on your license and for what offense.

Your driving history begins the day you're issued your permit, so it's pretty unlikely you would have received any points against your license for a violation before you were legally able to drive. But, as each state makes its own laws regarding driving, Michigan could be different.

I cannot comment specifically about Michigan's license point policy but in New Jersey, the state will deduct up to two points per year for each year you go without violations, but that number will never be reduced below zero.

its called driving record and yes you can get it but its not free shoyuld be able to either go down to dmv or go to your states name and dmv online

You can go to the DMV directly and obtain a copy of your driving record for a nominal fee. But here is something else to consider- The penalties for accidents and violations of the law are much more severe for new drivers under the age 18. Insurance companies are even worse in that they are not very forgiving for crashes and breaking the law when it comes to young drivers. Violations that are seemingly "normal" for most adults are considered to be major sin for minors behind the wheel.

Call the DMV and ask them?

You didn't give a state...In Calif., you may obtain your MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) for $5.00. If you are under 18, your parent(s) may obtain your MVR.
Once you turn 18, only you have access to your MVR. You fill out a short request form and hand it to a DMV clerk who will then print out your MVR.
Many employers today are requesting an MVR as additional information when applying for a job, especially if the job involves driving.
