I will be permanently moving to Houston in July and am planning to take my Mexican car with me. Please tell me what I should consider to make this change as smooth as possible. I thank you in advance

You have 30 days, to transfer everything over to TX tags. You have ZERO time with Mexico plates, on a car, in the USA, as you have no INSURANCE that will cover.
Now, in order to get TX insurance, you have to have a TX license, and that means you have to be here legally. Here in Houston, about 30% of the population is here ILLEGALLY, so that's an issue. You can't get a license, without a permanent visa. So, first you get the license, then buy the insurance, then pay for the title and tags, and then pay for the inspection.
Most people coming up from Mexico just buy a car here. |

I couldn't find much on bringing in a Mexican car, but you might have trouble if it didn't meet US safety and emissions standards. You should contact the US embassy or a consulate and see if they can give you some info. |
