Isn't the proposed car scrappage scheme yet another chance for the Motor Trade to rip customers off?

It wd be so easy for dealers to grab the £2k payment then jack the price of the new car up; anyway why shd taxpayers help car industry when the world is glutted with cars and many cars 9 yrs old have lotsa life left in them yet?

Timbo is here
It will have little effect as drivers of cars worth less than £2k choose to do so in the main and generally because they cannot afford to buy a new car even if they get a lot more for their old car.
Some people like myself never would buy a new car prefering that someone else gets to suffer the initial depreciation.

Most people right now, even if they wanted to will struggle to get finance on the new car.

The fact that this works in Germany is no indication as to what would happen here - germans generally rent their houses so can afford to buy other stuff. maybe that is what we should be doing.

I feel the same! I get hassled for driving my 25-35 year old trucks because they are supposedly bad for the environment. I think this is an ignorant point of view though, because I need the size and cargo capacity. I also get close to the same fuel economy as new trucks in the same class, but I dont have to spend multiple thousands of $ to fix my trucks! I can fix it in my own garage with hand tools, which is impossible on a new car.

Lets see, my 1975 Chevy runs clean, starts easier that any new car I ever been in, can protect me in a crash, and still has another 20 years of life left. Why fill a land fill and empty my pocket for no reason?

Prius owners need to do some research into the amount of damage done by the production of these "Eco-friendly" cars. Besides, if all they care about is the environment, they should buy a scooter.

The dealers are offering lots of 'specials' at the moment - they would be the first thing to go.

well said! i am never going to give up my '65 land rover, runs like a dream, goes through anything, always starts, modified to f**k, runs on Diesel and LPG and bio fuel ( chip fat )
costs £125 a year insurance and £0 road tax ( classed as a classic ) and it sails through the MOT every year

You could be right, and the £2k will come from all of us that pay tax. This isn,t a free-bee at all .Besides I like to drive my older car because it is better made and cheaper to service. All the depreciation has gone. I agree that the motor industry has been in denial about what it is selling and needs to contract. Only a small amount of people are in a position to buy a new private car and the industry is whining because their fleet sales which accounts for most of their business has dried up.

I'm worried about what this scheme will do to the availability of cheap old cars. There are many people on low incomes who cannot afford a car worth more than £1000, at the moment there is a good supply of perfectly serviceable 'bangers' available for less than that figure.

It seems criminal to me to be scrapping perfectly serviceable cars just to sell new ones. The most environmentally friendly car is one that has already been built.

There is overcapacity in the car manufacturing industry, and some car plants need to close. we can't artificially boost demand forever.

You are right many 9 year old cars are in good condition. Having said this it has to be noted that this scheme has kept demand for cars up in Germany. In the UK demand for new cars is on its knees.
