Hi, I am thinking of having private driving lessons with my dad as well as my instructor, I was just wondering if I need to be insured to learn in his car?

You definitely do need to be added to his insurance. The insurance company will possibly want you to be a named driver on your dad's policy (some insurance companies do not like young driver's and may well charge quite a substantial premium if you are under 25). Your dad should contact his insurance company and they will ask the relevant questions in order for you to be covered to drive on his insurance. |

It is a criminal offence for you to drive your Dad's car without him letting your insurance company know about you beforehand, you need to be added as a "Named Driver" If not this would also cause your Dad to be charged with allowing you to take control of the car without insurance, PLEASE be aware that Police have ZERO tolerance on this type of offence and will arrest you as soon as they stop you.
P.S. It only costs an average of £30 extra to add a learner to insurance policies.. Much better to pay them than the court..

you MUST be insured on ANY car you drive. it wont be expensive, your dad will just put you on as a named driver |

all he has to do is phone the insurance company... they will do it over the phone.
and of course you need insurance... youll be driving. |

At State Farm we do not rate for drivers on permits, just licensed drivers. I don't know if that varies from state to state, but a phone call to your insurance agent would answer this question for you. Once you have a license, you will need to be rated as a household driver. |

You are considered an insured under the policy if you are a resident relative and/or if you are driving with his permission. You don't have to be added, but once you are a regular user you should be. |
