Liability Insurance With No Car?

I need Liability Insurance before I can get my licences in NC, but I don't have a car, nor do I drive a car. Where can I go to get this, or what can I do?

I live alone, and I CANT buy a car from anyone unless its personal buy with out them. My parents are both passed, and Im only 18, and have no other family BUT a brother who doesnt drive either.
Anyone know of a company I can get insurance from without a car, or what that would even be?

Contact some insurance companies and ask if they have an operator owner policy (also called non-owner policy). Explain you don't own a car, you are looking to get insurance to cover yourself when you drive any vehicle. I think I have dealt recently with a farmers policy that was an operator only policy, but don't quote me on that. That claim was weeks ago and best I try to remember every claim I can't guarentee it was a farmers policy. But I would check them though, along with a few other companies. |

its called non owners insurance. you can get it from any independent agent. I write it all the time. |

How do you expect to pass the driving test, without a car? You can't exactly rent one, ya know?
You'll have to get added to that person's policy. After the test, after you have your license, they can delete you, and you can buy a "named nonowner" policy, but it is only good for like rental cars - not that you'll find anyone who will rent you a car at 18. Any car that is in your household, isn't covered. Any car regularly furnished for your use, isn't covered. |

You're lucky because in NC, you have a group of agents that SPECIALIZE in auto insurance. Their alliance website is:

You should be able to find an agent here that can help you.
Typically the "non-owners" policies that some of the responders on this site make mention of will NOT cover you in vehicles furnished to you for regular use. If you do NOT own a car, why the urge to go buy car insurance? In Texas, you can sign an affidavit at the drivers license office stating that you do NOT own a car so you don't have to show proof of insurance to have your license. And since NC is an insurance reporting State, you may need to check into that to maintain your drivers license for ID purposes.

have your parents or a relative put you on their insurance and use their car for the test...that's what I did.
add: USAA is only for military personnel and families. Plus their rates are exponentially higher than other agencies if you are young or don't have a good driving record (or if you have a husband with a lead foot LOL) |

You can get non-owners insurance, probably through any agency. I get it from USAA. |

It is against the law for an insurance company to deny you insurace coverage, car or not. That is the case in Texas anyway. |

Are your parents going to allow you to drive their car? You would get added to their insurance policy. Otherwise, save your pennies for that first vehicle. Why do you need a license if you don't have a car? |
