Lien holder of a purchased vehicle?

So i purchased my grandmother's car which she has had paid off since 1996, then i tried registering the car and found out there was a lien on it from GMAC. I had the title with it signed off but the dmv said they never received notification that the car was released to my grandmother. So now i have to get taht notification in order to register the car. My question is where do i start and should i expect this to be a long process?

John says that your Grandmother should never have had the title. John may be correct for his (USA) state but in many other states, The owner of the car is given and always has possession of the title. It merely states, that GMAC is the lien holder. In such a case, when the loan has been satisfied, GMAC sends a "Lien release" to Grannie. That together with the title, is sufficient to get a new title. Obviously GMAC has for some reason, not released their lien. Grannie needs to contact GMAC to get it straightened out.

If you have the title, and the title has the stamp and signature from GMAC on it, then that IS the lien release. The way your describing the title, I don't think you need anything else. But you may have had a newbie DMV worker...
In Calif you can get this title change done at AAA Auto Club as well as DMV.

In the event that you need another stamp and signature proving the cars paid off, phone GMAC and ask for a duplicate.
It could take GM 1-3 weeks.
Then, turn it into the DMV and the new title is mailed to you-another 3-4 weeks.

GMAC always sends a signed letter with the title signed off. If there was a loan with GMAC (and this would have been an original loan) then they'd have sent a stamped title to your grammy. Your grammy should NEVER have possessed physical title to the car...GMAC would have had it. So, something here is amiss....

If this debt was paid it's a simple thing to get GMAC to send YOu a notice of release of lien, as well as the state...but if you're in the state of CA. , good luck with the morons who work there being able to help.

Get the stamped sign off, present it, and when the dumbass at the window refuses to accept it, ask for a supervisor, whi WILL either accept it or call GMAC. Go to the DMV at opening time please, otherwise you'll get the EST lunch time excuse...

I need a copy of the release of the llien for my 99 buick. I have misplaced the title and need a release to obtain a new one. Is it possible for me to get a copy of the release. can you help me with this? I am trying to sell the car.
