Am thinking of selling my car before I go abroad for a year- so won't need insurance. Will I have lost my No Claims Bonus by the time I get back and need to buy a car and insure it?

Ask your insurance company. Usually they will wave 3 or 6 months but a year usually breaks the having continuous insurance rating. |

No. Most insurers and that's the majority, sill assume quite rightly that you were abroad or stopped driving for a while. You will not lose your no claims bonus. Just keep hold of your present insurance docs and you can present these to the next insurer when you get around to it. |

The rule of thumb is that your no claims bonus will be valid for up to two years from the cancellation date of your policy.
Some insurers may insist on it being less than one year, however, so I recommend you see an insurance broker when you come back (keep the cancellation letter as proof) to ensure that you are placed with an insurer who will accept the bonus rather than going on the internet and risk inadvertently insuring with a company that will not accept the proof. |

From the date of cancellation, you have 2 years to re-use your no claims bonus. After 2 years, you start over so you should be fine if you are only away for 1 year. |
