MOT dates query,,, UK?

My car is 3 tomorrow. I have car tax which expires at the end of 2008. It has never had an MOT due to its age. Do i need to get an MOT tomorrow, or can I leave it until next week. How does the government know whether I got the MOT on time. What do I do after I get the MOT, do I need to inform anyone??

I havent had a car before...

First MOT is due 3 years after the cars first date of registration, shown on your V5

If that date is tomorrow, then I'm afraid you need an MOT Certificate from tomorrow.

Without it you are driving illegally and will nullify your insurance too.

Hope this helps:)

Needs to be done on due date or up to a month before due date, all mots are on database now and police vars and vans fitted with ANPR will flag up straight away if your car doesn't have one.
If you don't use the car or don'r get caught using it there is no fine for not renewing on time like there is with road tax.
You can drive without mot if you are taking it to a pre booked mot test.
Once mot'd simply keep it safe at home with other vehicle documents in case you need to produce it for some reason.

legally you need a MOT certificate when the car is 3 years old. So you need a MOT right now.

Unless you otherwise come to the attention of the police then arguably you could delay getting the MOT certificate until then, but you'd be breaking the law. And I wouldn't rely on that as valid MOT ceretificate may be soemthign being checked by the police as part of the ANR systems. Some insurance companies uses the lack of a MOT certificate as a mechanism to void the insurance.

There is no need to inform anyone, thats done by the the testing centre, who are connected to the VOSA & police computers.

mind you think positive, this way round you are getting your MOT done well away from the tax renewel date, so you are spreading the bills

1st off once u got the mot thats it just make sure u get another next year if u still have da car. yes u need to get it moted its on the dvla data base. its £60 fine for no mot

You should have had notification from the Department of Transport (or whatever it's called these days) that your first MOT is due. And yes, you must get it done. Otherwise your insurance is invalid.

trust me police will know and you will need a new MOT before you can drive legal again. also if you dont get an MOT then your insurance will become invalid if driving on the road

The MOT must be done on or before the cars third birthday.  Then every year after that.  The MOT is now all computerised and the DVLA keep an eye on what should be MOT'd and what hasn't.  You can not leave it to next week or you may just get a knock on the door from plod!

For example, a vehicle registered ‘from new’ on 1 April 2004 will require its MOT no later than 1 April 2007.
The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) run the MOT system

You will need to get it MOT'ed tommorow to stay on the safe side, if not you risk being pulled by the police (although you would have to be unlucky), although you may just get an earful instead of a fine. The police can tell as nowadays when you get an MOT it gets logged on a computer database held by VOSA, and this is linked to the police so when they run a check on your car it will flag up as having no MOT. When you get your MOT done all you have to do is drive the car out of the garage and thats it, you just get a green sheet of paper telling you that the car has passed! BTW an MOT only takes about half an hour.
