Minor Auto Accident - Suggestions?

A co-worker of mine was recently in a minor auto accident, he rear-ended a vehicle (mid-90's Ford Escort) going about 5-10 miles an hour causing some cracking in the Escorts rear bumper. Both cars were fine, no air bags went off and there were no injuries except for the cracked Escort bumper. The police were not called and they exchanged insurance info (they both have the same insurance firm) at the scene. My co-worker has no intention of filing anything on his policy but the drive of the Escort will probably file for a new bumper. What will happen next or what should my co-worker expect to see happen with his insurance?

Your friend should report the loss to the insurance company. It does not matter that both party's are insured by the same carrier. Ultimately, his liability coverage will pay for the damage to the other party's vehicle. The other party is not entitled to a new bumper. He will either get an aftermarket part, or a salvage part.
Your friend's insurance may not necessarily go up. Some insurance company's now offer "first accident forgiveness". |

Call the insurance company and tell them in case the other driver calls and files a false claim |

the escort driver will file a claim with his insurance and they will contact your co-workers insurance company to cover the bill. he may be liable for any out of pocket deductible since he did hit the escort driver's car, but his insurance should cover that under his comprehensive plan. both insurance companies will call him to verifiy the claim and he should go on record that there was no damage to his vehicle and that he is not filing a claim. and that should be the end of that... |

you should of called the police. that way its documented that something offically happend. Kind of get a 3rd party involved.
I even called the police when a deer hit my car for insurance issues. |

I have a '93 Escoret and I got rear ended. The other guy's insurance paid me $600. I suggest your friend offer the other guy $600 to settle without the insurance being involved.
BTW-I went to a junk yard and got a bumper for $200 and put it on myself. |

Your co-worker could ask the other driver if they could go to a reputable auto body shop together and get an estimate. Negotiate a price to have the Escort rear bumper replaced. If the other driver insists on going through insurance, then your co-worker will just have to follow the claim process. His insurance premiums may go up a bit or a lot for the next couple of years, depending on how much that claim costs his insurance firm; or it might not go up much at all if his insurance firm forgives first accident. |
