My BMW fails the emissions test in IL...Can I register it in another state?

I spend time here in IL (where my plates are from) for school, but also consider MN my home.
My BMW needs a new Cat Converter and 02 sensor before I can pass the emissions test for IL...I do not have the money for this now and the tags expired last month (already got one ticket).
Could I transfer it to MN and get MN plates? I can have them sent to my Mom's house (my perm address)....How much would this cost, can it be done and how?

The emissions test is the same everywhere, so if it failed in IL it will probably fail in MN too. Sorry :(

Yes, if you are a resident of MN you can get registered there, and also switch over your insurance and license. As far as cost, I have no idea, but it might actually be cheaper to fix the problem. You do know if you don't your vehicle will run rich and get a check engine light soon, don't you? |

The state of Minnesota stopped doing emission testing of vehicles back in 1999, so were you to register the vehicle in Minnesota you would not have to perform an emissions test. However once you bring the vehicle back to Illinois you would have 30 days to register the vehicle in Illinois or you could be fined for not registering your vehicle. |

The only way you can register your vehicle is to physically move to another state and become a legal resident of that state & you will have to find a state that does not require an emissions test or you will be in the same position as you are now.
You are a legal resident of IL, so the car MUST remain registered with that state.
So you have 2 options- get the car fixed or move to another state. Now which option is cheaper? |

All states require emissions testing. If it will not pass in IL, then it will not pass in MN either. You may be able to transfer the registration and plates to MN, but you will still need the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor. |
