My Boyfriend gave me his car. i need to know how to transfer it to my name?

Ignore the advice to have him sell you the car for a dollar. All agencies go by the selling price or the fair market value, whichever is the higher amount, and it will do you no good.

Take the title, with him signing as the seller (some states require the signature be notarized), your proof of insurance and the bill of sale if you have one to the DMV. They will get you a new title in your name, and transfer your plates over so you can drive it. Enjoy your car.

You will need your drivers license, title for the car he gave you, he will need to go with you to sign the title over to you, your proof of insurance, your registration card for the car you are driving now, license plate number. Make sure he tells them it was a gift. Every place is diff. as far as price. I know it is less expensive if you just transfer the plate, but if your plate expires soon like in March you may just want to get a new plate b/c you will be paying to transfer then when your plate is due for renewal you will be paying again, so whatever works best for you.

Some states are different, but in my state he would have to sign the title over to you, then you would take it ,along with proof of insurance, to the DMV. There will be a fee for title transfer and also for the new license plate. He would keep the old plate.

You should call your local office and ask them. I'm sure every state is different and depending on the age of the car the rules are different. Newer cars you have to bring in and they have to have the odometer reading. Older cars they don't care about the odometer. You definately have to have insurance or all you get is the title transfer, not tags. Even if you already have tags, you still need to prove insurance .

I just sold a 1993 in FL and it was about $100.00 for everything for the girl and I gifted the car to her so she didn't have to pay tax. She was only able to get the title transfered because she didn't have proof of ins for the tag.

You will have to take that to the tag office. There will be a fee for tax tag and title.

You should get insurance before you go to the tag office.

Have him sell you the car for a buck. Otherewise you are going to have topay blue book value for the tax. Just go to the DMV and they have all the forms you need there.
