My C drive has become full?
Find answers to your legal question.

My C drive has become full?

My C drive has become full! I have a External Hard drive but the tutorials from Windows does not explain how to change the C drive commands so that I can change all command i.e Boot up commands plus all the other info the computer needs to sign on? Once I can do that how do I transfer all the files I have on the C drive to the External Hard drive?
Please can anyone help!!!
Many thanks
Keith M

Why not just move all your photos and music to the external drive. This will surely free up loads of space on your hard drive.

Bardic
Simple, leave your OS and program files alone. As both Kenny and Charlie say, simply shift your photos, music, video files to the external drive. They're the ones that take up enormous amounts of space.

To be honest, I wouldn't start moving the stuff that the Operating System requires...

I'd keep the OS and boot executables on your C drive, and just move all your other files and programs onto the external drive.

I know this isn't really a solution, but it is advice from a person whose old laptop had very little memory and a habit of crashing, so I kept as much as possible on my external!

Good luck with finding a solution! I hope someone else can be of more help!

clear out your recycling bin... if that doesnt work or if you've already done that.. compress the files on your c-drive by going to the start thing at the bottom left of your computer screen.. go to all programs then go to accesories then go to system tools and go to either disk clenup( recomended ) or go to disk defragmentor .

I have a 160G external that I only have photos, music and movies on, 129G are full, but I am only using 20G of my computers internal hard drive, I left all the other stuff on it.

You will need to free up space on your C drive for Windows to run properly. However you cannot move Windows itself to an external HDD. Instead, you will need to move/delete other files from the C drive to free up space.

Following are a few options for a PC with a full drive:

1) If you are running lower than 300 MB of space, Windows should pop up asking you to clean-up. Follow this pop-up and complete the steps necessary. It will ask automate a lot of the steps mentioned below (empty recycle bin, temporary internet files, etc).

2) Attach the external HDD and move non-Windows files there:
> Attach external HDD
> Open 'My Computer'
> Open C Drive
> Repeat above two steps for the attached HDD
> Move files from C to external HDD

Note that you mustn't move the following folders:
C:Documents and Settings
C:Windows
C:Program FIles

3) Remove unnecessary programs
> Start Menu > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs

4) Remove old computer accounts (users) that are no longer used. This is more involved, so see the below article:
http://windows.about.com/od/useraccounts/ss/deleteuser.htm

Finally, you may wish to look into getting a new HDD altogether. Unless you're technically savvy, you may wish to see your nearest IT Store for help.

If you end up buying a new computer, or HDD, with a backup of the 'C:Documents and Settings' folder, you can virtually restore your new PC or HDD to the exact way it is now.

You need to backup everything & re-install windows on a new drive with more space. You'll also need to re-install your applications.
