My Car Service/MOT cost £600,have they overcharged me?!?

I had to pay over 600pounds for my car service(from which MOT was 50.00), i just wana know if i've been skanked, i live in west yorkshire, the following fix was carried out:
1.Engine Oil - 14.99
2. Oil Filter - 5.90
3. Air Filter - 12.60
4. 4 Spark Plugs - 16.00
5. 2 Brake Front Hoses. - 14.86
6. Brake load valve. - 69.98
7. Cat converter & centre section - 130.00
8. cv boot clip - 4.90
9. 2 h7 headlamp bulbs - 10.00
10. 2 side repeter bulbs - 3.98
11. brake fluid. - 4.90
12. front brake pads - 22.00
13.MOT(no vat) - 50.00
14. labour to carry out service and mot - 180.00
inc vat 613.00 Additional Details thanks all!received a huge response. Its a peugeot 206.And yes they quoted the price before i gave them the thumbs up to carry out the job as i needed the car urgently, it had taken them 3 days to complete, i.e. waiting for parts etc. The car drove fine up until the last week before service it started dying...

Yes!
General rule! - NEVER have MOT work done by the place that failed it! UNLESS it is a prestige car that needs special equipment, or it is no more than a 50 quid (or a negligible sum) estimate.
I was quoted 260 Pounds for MOT work recently.
I went to a local one man band mechanic and he did the work for less than 100. Took it back to the place that failed it and had the retest free so saved 160+ Pounds. |

It's a big bill, but considering what's been done, it's pretty reasonable compared to what some places might charge. It looks like a good morning's work, so the labour charge isn't too bad either.
Yes, you would have got it done cheaper if you'd spent half a day sourcing all the parts yourself and doing the work yourself, but I'm guessing you might not be too confident about tinkering with the brake system, which seems to be where most of the work was needed. |

Prices aren't far adrift. Looks like you've been driving around in a heap of junk for some time. Some of those items you could easily have done yourself if you ever checked - the bulbs for instance are simple to do. Do you ever check to see if your lights work?
A little regular maintenance would have spread all that out for you, too. |

Nothing unusual here.
Labour charges are the most expensive part. |

There's nothing there that looks too badly overpriced (although you don't say what kind of car it's for). The labour seems pretty reasonable because this would have been several hours work.
Did you ask for an estimate before they carried out the work? Any decent garage should be able to give you this before they start, and it saves nasty surprises when the bill comes. |

they seem like pretty decent prices so not really
the only question is.. did you need all of it?
was your car working properly? |

Cat converter £100
but all the other stuff seems ok |

It would appear that your car was in quite a bad way and given what they did then it all sounds ok. But I am surprised you have allowed your car to get into this state and still been driving it. Have your car checked over more often so that problems are noticed and fixed before bigger problems arise. |

call any parts store can get a price on part call three shops and get a price on the same job and the prices look about right but wow when was th elast time you had the car look after did you not have any lights i see a few things that would question me some but since i wasnt there and it wasnt my car id have to say you have not been taking care of it so yes thats about right whenyou dont care for your car every day it cost you more money when you have it done all at once most of them things you could have done at home
6. Brake load valve. - 69.98
7. Cat converter & centre section - 130.00
8. cv boot clip - 4.90
9. 2 h7 headlamp bulbs - 10.00
10. 2 side repeter bulbs - 3.98
all kind of odd to be bad the rest you could have got for same price and done at home and save the 180 buy it looks good to me and if you was here my town that would have cost you a lot more for lack of car care you got a way cheap |

A service is a con (you out of money)
You should DIY, you dont know whether you needed all that stuff, did you really have two dud headlamp bulbs?
Always go to a local council run MOT testing station, they just test ,they dont repair.
Take it somewhere else for repairs, tell them its going for a retest, and return for retest.
An old car is worth the money cos you can DIY. |

It depends on your cars age, make and model but it seems like you've been well and truly ripped off. I wouldn't except the above charges as it seems they've done everything and anything to increase the bill. Take it further. |
