My boyfriend sold his motorcycle but forgot to take the tags off.. what do we do?

My boyfriend sold his motorcycle a few weeks ago to someone off of craigslist. He forgot to take the tags off of the bike and when he went to tell DMV that he sold it they said he would have to pay a big fine and all this other stuff b/c he doesn't have the tags to turn in. We no longer have the contact information for the man who bought the bike. What should we do?

If the DMV is nice enough and the buyer will cooperate with you they can give you the buyers name and address and you can send him a letter asking him to send you the plates back or I would assume that you made out a bill of sale and you can do the same yourself.....if not then you will have to pay the fine........
