My car's been crushed by the council (sob sob) what do I do now? Do I have to register it off the road?

The council should have informed the DVLA when they crushed it.
If you still have the V5 then send that back to DVLA with an explanation and any evidence you have that it was crushed.

The council would have taken care of the paperwork when it was crushed as it would have gone through a licenced company.

uk...if its scrapped,then you fill in the ''scrapped'' part of the logbook and send it away...
if it was off road[not on a public highway] then it should have been SORN'd..statutory of road notification..it can be done online at the dvla..

Before they crush any cars the council is obliged to try and contact the registered owner.
If the car was registered in your name then they would have written to you to advise you that they were planning on crushing it.
If it was not registered to you then you don't have to do anything.

Also, they would only have assumed it was abandoned if it was not showing a valid tax disc.

They must have given you some sort of Notice when they impounded it surely. They don't tow it away and crush the same day.

If they did dispose of the vehicle they would have had to obtain a correct 'disposal' ticket to satisfy the DVLA.

They would need your details to complete this.

There doesn't appear to be much information about this online, do you know why the council crushed your car - had the tax disc expired? I think that the best suggestion would be either to contact the council and find out if you have any statutory obligation to take any further action (complete paperwork and the like) or ring the DVLA and ask hypothetical questions in the first instance and see what they say also. Maybe you could also contact a local citizens advice bureau for information? Was the car registered in your name and current address, if so then maybe they should have took reasonable steps to contact you before crushing the car - ask a local solicitor for help or again try the CAB to see if you could make a case against them for unlawfully destroying your property. The main thing for using a car is that the car needs to have an MOT, Tax and Insurance, did you have all of those?? Declaring the car as off the road (SORN) means it's exempt from tax - if you had a valid tax disc on the car you may be able to get a refund from the DVLA by completing a SORN declaration. Their mistake. They now have to make the situation right. If they had gone into the records and researched, they would have found the registration active. You do not have to do anything unless the DMV comes asking for registration money. Then you send in a notice of non operation or sale to clear your records
