My car got Impounded beacause of my tags,what can I do?
Ok so I stay in los angeles and I purchased a "used" 02 honda civic in cash on Jan-30-09 from a auto sale dealer they gave me the receipts and forms that I sign stating that I purchsed the car and I even put it under my insurance allready so the problem is I got pulled over today by a cop and tha ****** towed my car saying that I need proof of the dmv stating that the car is mine? How can this be when the dealer told me I can drive it with no problem while they gave me the replacement tags for 90 days, so even though the cop didin't care and said those where not valid to him!!! I showed him everything licence,proof of insurance and the paper work I got from the dealer with the replacement tags placed on my window..
So I called the dealer and told them what was going on, why did this happend? the manager from the dealer is acting very shady telling me hes bearly going to send the paper work to the dmv since I still havent received my tags for "09" and said I should be getting them within 15 more days!
Now is this there fault? What can I do? Can I sue? Can I make them pay the expenses for the days my car is going to be in the yard?
I will be going to the dmv this monday!
Please advice what else I can do about this matter..

You will need to go to court most likely & possibly even sue the dealership for the impound fees since it looks like the dealership failed to submit the required paperwork to DMV showing that you did purchase the car & to transfer the title over to your name.
An attorney may be better to assist you in this matter than trying to fight this by yourself. Yes it will cost you money, but there is a lot riding on these charges by the police & you will not be able to recover the vehicle from impound until you can prove to them that you are legally the owner of the car. And all the time, that car will continue to be racking up daily impound fees while it sits in impound. The attorney should be able to get it so if you win, the losing party has to pay all of your impound fees, and attorney costs.
You may even try Googling the name of the car dealership to see if they pop up in any of those pissed off consumer blogs that are becoming very popular online (like http://www.ripoffreport.com for example)
Does the car have a decal or plate that says where you bought the car? If so, the police may have had problems with that dealership before doing some shady or possibly even illegal sales transactions & due to those past problems decided that impounding the car was the safest route since there was no way for the officer to prove that you were the actual owner.
Even if the officer did a VIN check, if the dealership failed to submit the paperwork to DMV to update the legal owners info to yours, that check would still come back to the previous registered name on the title & would not match your temp registration paperwork from the dealership or your insurance certificate & personal identification. In that respect, the officer was doing his job & you may not really be able to show fault on the officers part.
After reading and re-reading your information above, I get the feeling that the police has had problems with that dealership before. You yourself even said that the Manager of the dealership is "acting very shady".
My suggestion still stands- you need to contact an attorney. Before the impound fees become more than the price you paid for the car & this becomes a very expensive nightmare for you. |

Fight it in court, you have plenty of proof. It's obvious that the car is yours if you have all that proof and are already paying insurance premiums on it. Just tell the judge your story and present all the evidence. He (or she) will be reasonable. |
