i have a 08 toyota i got it when i lived in ca, the owner whom is my friend got it for me and i am making payments to him, i moved to florida and now am a resident here i want my plates to be in forida but since im not the titled owner and what not how do i go about that?

Unless your friend wants to move to Florida, it is illegal for them to register vehicles in more than one state!
AND it is not legal for them to 'buy you a car' this way....because if there is ANY accident, traffic tickets, illegal use of the vehicle-THEY are 100% liable! And YOU cannot legally get insurance to cover the vehicle! So if THEY are paying for insurance-and the insurance company finds out the vehicle is for YOUR use and in another state...they can lose the policy.
Then if YOU get stopped in the vehicle, YOU are in trouble for driving without insurance, if California has INSPECTION every year and you aren't going back to get it done-you are driving an UNINSPECTED vehicle, along with other charges!
What you are doing is wrong, wrong, wrong and could end up costing you every thing you've paid towards the car-they could lose all their insurance...it just is going to add up. |

you cannot get Fl plates unless you are the owner
I imagine the owners insurance company would not be thrilled by this arrangement by the way
Also I agree with the poster above with the addition that if the owner drops the insurance YOU will be responsible if there is an accident and they cannot collect from the owner |

The owner is going to have to do all of the DMV work. They won't let you do anything since you are not the owner.
He needs to contact Florida's DMV and see what they require to switch tags |

Since you are not the owner on the title, you won't be able to license the car in your name. If you are making payments to a friend who's name IS on the car, you can title it in your name with a lien on the title stating that you are making payments to your friend.
This is how it works when you buy a car from a dealer and have a loan. |

No problem. You are the registered owner, and your friend is the lien holder and legal owner, correct?
"Take your proof of Florida insurance; your original out of state title and verification of the motor vehicle's *vehicle identification number (VIN), completed on form HSMV 82040 or HSMV 82042 to your local Florida county tax collector's office. If there is more than one owner on the out of state title for transfer, all applicants must sign the application or all applicants must be present."
If you really meant what you asked, and you are not the registered owner on the title, you can't, and you shouldn't even have the car since it isn't yours. Your 'friend' could take the money until the car is paid for, and then take it back. It is not and never was your car. What's worse, if you should have your car impounded for any reason, only the owner can get it out of impound.
You blow a red light camera, your friend gets the ticket, and he is the one in trouble if it's not paid.
Well, you see the problem. Do something to be added to the title as registered owner, or return the car to your friend, because you can't get it registered in Florida. |
