A month or so ago, I was broadsided by another driver. Her fault, not mine..I was going straight in a residential area, and she turned from a side street right into me.
So we exchanged info, the police came, etc.
Her insurance was through Geico and now 3 weeks later, the claim status is "under investigation"...meaning, I think her insurance possibly was lapsed. So far that is all Geico will tell me.
My bill is $1500.00 for the repair estimate. Do I just wait for Geico to finish, or better to turn it into my insurance? Any thoughts? Amazingly this is the second time I've ever been hit, and I'm not really sure what the protocol is.
Additional Details
I should add, that she offered to pay out of pocket, in the hopes I would NOT contact Geico. But when the estimate came through, and she stopped returning my calls..well, it does not take a rocket scientist...that's why I suspect her policy has lapsed. Just seems like by 3 weeks later, we should be moving along with this, and all I get is "under investigation".

Hiya Jill. It's Brittany here, My last account got deleted. Anywho!!!! Do NOT turn it in on your insurance! That will fall under a comprehensive claim under your policy and next time your policy renews your rates will sky rocket OR your insurance company will drop you (not good!) Geico takes forever and a day on their claims, trust me on that one. Just keep calling your agent and asking about the status of the claim. If it turns out that this turbo lady doesn't have any insurance, don't file it under your comprehensive coverage, file it under your uninsured motorists property damage. That will not penalize you as much as filing a comprehensive claim. If you have any questions just shoot me an e-mail and I can help you out. |

I would have immediately contacted my insurance company. It's up to them to fight Geico....not you. |

Turn the claim into YOUR insurance company and let them fight it for you.
They will normally pay and then surrogate against the other insurance company OR against the other person if they find that there is no valid insurance in effect.
If you find out that the insurance had lapsed, turn the matter over to the local police that came out. In most cases, presenting an invalid ID card to a law enforcement officer constitutes a Class B misdemeanor.

it sounds like you need to report it to your insurance. it will be covered under your collision coverage subject to a deductible. geico is actually pretty fast in their claims processing. the other party's insurance was probably cancelled. they may be waiting for a payment to process, there is usually a 15 day grace period to renew your policy with no lapse. |

Double-check your auto insurance policy, but you should have contacted your insurance company AS SOON AS IT HAPPENED. Normally, your insurance company takes care of it and collects from the other policyholder's company. Your are not supposed to be dealing with the opther person's company. |
