My car was stolen and burnt out on Monday. Tesco have asked if we want to make a claim still but....?

Unfortunately, when you took out the insurance you signed a contract to pay a certain amount to insure the car. Just because they have allowed you to break up the payment into monthly pieces, doesn't mean you stop paying if the car is written off.. you have to pay the full amount agreed. sorry.

Of course you still have to pay. you pay for a years insurance. the fact that you split the payments up in to monthly payments is irrelevant. Why wouldn't you want to claim anyway. that's what insurance is for. Make a claim, pay tesco what you owe then if there is any money left (usually not) get another car and insure elsewhere. I found Swift cover to be the cheapest for me. but everyone is different.

All Motor Insurance policies have a cancellation clause, some have what is called Short period, in your case 4 months left to run 8 months cover approx probably 20% max refund. so you may still owe a small amount. If wording is Pro-Rata cancellation then Tesco will charge 8/12th premium. In essence if you decide not to claim just write a letter to your bank to cancel the DD with a copy to Tesco. No more to pay as youve made 8 payments. If you plan to replace the car then ask to transfer that on to the policy. If that car is a higher premium the extra will be spread over the period left to run. The value you place on the corsa seems loe, unless it was in real poor condition. If average prior to the fire you should expect at least 400 nett of excess. Also if no claim made you will retain the bonus if policy continued until renewal. If you already have protected bonus just claim argue the value buy another car and carry on the policy.

Okay, first of all the premiums. The insurers could have insisted on the annual premium as a lump sum up front. Instead they've effectively loaned you the money and you're paying it back in instalments. Thus, you have to continue repaying that loan until it's clear, no matter what happens to the car.

Secondly, why ever not make a claim? Surely the car's worth more than Â£385, isn't it?

claim but then haggle the price to cover the remaing cost of insurance, never except 1st price and never use tesco for insurance i know several people that have been very unhappy with them

The answer to your question is relatively simple. If you are not claiming, then yes you can get the remainder of your premium back. Read your policy and it will say something like "If you cancel your policy you will get a pro rate refund less 1 month". So what you need to do is to phone Tesco and tell them that the crash has been disposed of and that you need to cancel the insurance. Confirm to them that you are not making a claim but want to cancel the insurance policy.
