My dealer is registering my car at the DMV?

I bought a used car recently and the dealer says that he usually takes the paperwork for about 5 cars he's sold recently at one time to the DMV to register them/get the plates for the customers. No one I've talked to has ever encountered this kind of set-up, nor have I. I thought everyone had to go to the DMV themselves to register their car. How does this work?

Dealers where I live do it all the time as a courtesy to their customers & have been for decades.
Dealers can get in/out of DMV a heck of a lot faster than you can. In some states the dealer is also charged a fee when they do title transfers & it's cheaper to turn in 4-5 than it is to go there with only 1 or 2.
All the dealer is doing is turning in the paperwork that you signed to transfer the title into your name & register the vehicle. You probably received temporary paper tags for the car & your new title & new metal plates will be mailed to your house.
It isn't a scam nor is it some backwoods hillbilly used car salesman. |

When I bought my last new car, the dealer did mine - saves the hassle of going yourself, I suppose. |

check it out phone the dmv, personally i cant see a problem ,if this dealer is cluey enough ,it save`s the customer the time , and it improves his business name |

If you look among the paperwork you signed, you'll probably see a document called a "limited power-of-attorney" which authorizes the dealer, or his representative, to register the car in your name, as a courtesy. |

ive seen they do it im guessing you didnt pay for car and he don twant to give you the tittle or give you a drive out tag so you could do it im wondering how he going to sign your name to get it in your name |

He can't register a car in your name. I would ask him about it and contact the DMV to be sure. I don't think that is legal.
It looks like some users think it is OK. I would still check with the DMV to be sure. |
