My question is regarding a car accident that took place 8 months ago...?

I got into a car accident while this 25 year old guy was driving a car insured under my insurance policy. We were all still friends prior and at the time of the incident... To make the story short, we all went to the ICBC claim centre and the lady that assisted us got him to sign a paper saying that: since he was the driver responsible for the accident, HE is to pay for the amount of the payout for the damaged done to the other vehicle. I ALSO signed the paper saying that I was there to acknowlege the fact that he was going to pay up.
I made clear to the icbc lady that he kept telling me that if an accident were to happen, it would automatically ding him because he's the driver. I'm young and It's my first car so I have no idea about these things at the time...
Anyway, after the accident he had the nerve to tell me to pay half of the payout which is a whopping $4,000 (thousand dollars)! Obviously I had no intention to since he just signed a paper acknowleging the fact that HE WAS TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGE! And so a month after this happened, they've been treating my like **** (forgot to mention i lived with them at the time) and just completely turned from day to night! AND I MOVED OUT...
Now, the payout is due for payment in full by MAY. And the last time I heard from them (his wife especially) was of phone calls to my cellphone threatening me left right and centre. I really can't be too sure if he's gonna even make the payment and i'm worried that I may get stuck having to pay for out out of my own pocket. I think of this everyday since that accident and it's still a chronic stress enhancer to my already stressed out life.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS BEST TO DO...
SHOULD I BE CALLING THEM UP TO REMIND THEM TO PAY UP?
SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY OUT OF MY OWN POCKET AND LIVE ON AND LEARN FROM IT??? I AM BEYOND CONFUSED...
The days are getting closer and MAY 2009 seem to be nearing so quickly! So please, any advice or comments about this would be so appreciated...

I don't understand this. Why isn't your liability insurance paying for the accident? If he owns a vehicle with ICBC coverage, why isn't his liability paying for the accident?
I am a retired broker in Manitoba. I know it doesn't matter who has an accident in my car, my insurance covers my car, and liability covers the other vehicle. I know if I have an accident driving somebody else's car, and their liability coverage is inadequate, my liability insurance will respond.
Was he drunk or on drugs at the time? Was he driving on a suspended licence with your knowledge?
