My wife just hit another car. Our damage is around $1500 and I have a $500 deductible; should I turn it in?

My wife was at work and was backing up and she hit a parked car. She knew the person that she hit so the police weren't involved (we are paying for the other parties damages). My question is, our damage is around $1500 and I'm wondering if it is worth it to turn it in to our insurance. I have a $500 collision deductible and a $250 comprehensive deductible. Obviously, I or the insurance company won't know how much my insurance will go up until after the fact. So my question is does anyone think that it is worth it to turn it into the insurance or just pay it out of pocket?

You would save yourself a lot of money had you actually reported the accident. Yes, your insurance would go up, but now you are paying the costs of fixing your own car AND the cost of fixing the other car. I guess it depends on what kind of coverage you have, but my insurance would have charged me a deductible, yes, but would have paid for BOTH cars to be fixed. In the end, that would more than offset the increase in insurance. Otherwise, why bother even having insurance in the first place?

I doubt your insurance is going to go up $1500. You may also have First Accident Forgiveness. Furthermore, since you are dealing with an acquaintence, you should let the insurance company deal with the property damage claims.

Just one accident generally doesn't cause your insurance to go up as much as you would think. I would turn it in, unless you have money to burn and enjoy spending $1500 plus the cost of their damage instead of $500.
If there is a history of accidents, however you may want to just pay cash and skip the insurance company.

I was in a similar situation once with someone I knew (we had almost no damage), although we had agreed not to go the insurance route they ended up turning it in to their insurance company (even though it was my fault) who -in turn- contacted mine. Of course they wanted to know why I didn't let them know immediately. So it may be best just to let them know anyway.

Your insurance will not go up that much, but you will be out of pocket with out having the insurance people deal with it.

Turn the whole thing into insurance. Your premium isn't going to go up that much from one little incident. Unless of course $1500+ is no big deal to you.

Just turn it in to insurance. My boyfriend did the same thing only in MY car and i just turned it in. I have a great company though, cause my insurance only went up by like $10 per month and I am 24. I took defensive driving, and since I am in college turned in a report card that stated I had a 4.0 GPA and I got an extra 15% discount for all of that so now I pay like $10 less than what i originally paid before it even went up in the first place.

So, obviously you have insurance, which would pay the damage to the car she hit, and apparently you also have collision with a $500 deductible, but you aren't using your insurance? Why not? Just for your own car, you save $1,000. Do you think your policy will increase that much if you claim?

It probably isn't . You would only get $1,000.00 and the surcharge on your policy could easily exceed that amount in a few years. Also, in some states it might be hard to get insurance.

The answer could vary by person. It is alway a good idea to hear the suggestion from different sides and try to choose the best one. Here http://www.CarInsuranceTip.info/free-car-insurance.htm is a good one i recommend.

You can still call your insurance company and turn the whole thing over to them.

You don't need a police report, in many big cities they won't even send an officer to a parking lot accident.

This is why you have insurance, turn it over to them and save yourself $2000 or so.

Your $500 collision deductible will apply. Plus, the damage to the other car.

I'd turn it in. Damage to the other car will probably be at least $1500, plus a rental car for them.
