i bought a car maybe a year ago which only had a back license plate, i just got a ticket for not having a front license plate. so i was looking on dmv.ca.gov and dont know how this works. is this considered a duplicate,subsitute, or lost license plate? what do i need to tell the dmv and what do i need to take to the dmv? id like to avoid 2 trips. also does it have to be me the registered owner to request a license plate or can my wife go with my info?

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. This is NOT a case of getting a duplicate plate. You would file for a LOST plate. You will need to take the current registration and the remaining plate into the DMV.. You will be issued a completely NEW set of plates. The state is not set up to manufacture one single license plate. Only the registered owner can request this. |

Go to the DMV. Go to the counter, they will give you a form, Duplicate plate.
You will most likely will have to Surrender your current rear plate, meaning that you will have to turn it in and they give you (2 brand new) A Front and a rear plate!OOoo shiny~
Since making the same numbered plate is a waste of time, they will just give you fresh ones.
You pay like $18 or $25 bucks depending on your state, and turn in the old rear one. (Have a screw driver or socket set ready)... They will give you new plates right on the spot.~ Install it on your car.

You can also do this at the AAA Auto Club. They too have plates to hand you.
This is considered duplicate. Use CA form: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg156.pdf and it's $18 in CA.
REG 156 Application for replacement plates. In upper left corner put down OLD plate number, in section B check license plate, in section C check lost. (don't check "not received" that's only if you did it with in 30 days of purchase. It's too late now. Now they're going to charge you the $18)
It's important to show your drivers license.
Your state's application may be a little different.
