What do I need to do to drive the car and get the license plates? I never had a drivers license just a permit. I'm over the age of 18. So what steps do I need to take if I want to drive the car? The car has no plates right now and wondering what I need to do. Can you tell me the BEST thing to do now? Thanks for any advice.
Note: i'm doing everything on my own.

1. You need your driver's license. Without it, you can no register the vehicle. A permit allows you to drive certain hours, or with another licensed driver. The exact limits depend on the state you are in. Either way, it is illegal to drive your car right not.
2. Insure the car. You can get quotes if you call local insurance companies. If it is a used car, which I assume it is, talk to the representative about your options. You may be comfortable with 'liability' only, which covers you if you hit someone. If you do not choose collision damage, if you have an accident your insurance will not cover the repair cost. You can also choose levels of insurance, with higher and lower deductibles. A deductible is the amount you have to pay, if your car is damaged. It's usually $0, $250, $500 and up. The lower the deductible, the more insurance you will pay every month.
3. Register the vehicle with your DMV (dept of motor vehicles). You will need to bring your license, proof of insurance and most likely the vehicle title.
I don't know where you live, but I assume it is not in a state where the plates stay with the car since it doesn't have them now (?)
Just remember that you can not drive the car without these things. Doing so will affect your driver's record and that will make your insurance rates go up, as well as other troubles!

You need to have a license to register a car (at least in most states you do). Get your license at motor vehicle and at the same time, bring your title and proof of insurance and register the car. (Um, obviously don't drive the car there). |

You need to go to your local DMV ( dept of motor vehicles ) and first take the driving test , then get the car registered. You would be best to schedule an appointment for the drive test, cuz some DMV offices have long lines. You will also need proof of insurance to register the car and it would be wise not to drive the car there yourself - have a licensed driver take you in the car you are going to register (sometimes the DMV wants to see the car and you will need it to take the drive test). If the previous owner did not get the car smogged, you may have to before registering. Contact your DMV online for more info |
