No Car Insurance?
Find answers to your legal question.

No Car Insurance?

I got one of those "producer tickets" (uk) to take my documents to the police station, I'm going down now but the only problem is it was my mates car and im not insured. Im taking the mot certificate and my liscence and my own car insurance but this isnt valid for the car in question.

Will i be arrested or just get a summons later?

Just tell them you thought that you were covered through your own insurance you wont get arrested so dont worry ...you wont get away with it maybe a fine but its not a big crime take your documents and your mates documents to prove he has got insurance...and you will hear then when your courtcase is.

jab6361
i agree with top lad ,you aint legal dont drive .we already pay enough for idiots like you .trouble is a slap on the wrist is all you will get and the fine doesnt come anywhere near what you should be paying in insurance so you aint lost out anyway

BIG D
Check your mates insurance documents thoroughly because you might just be covered. Otherwise take it on the chin and dont' wriggle

skunk masta
You will get arrested dude, held, searched, and be questioned
eventually, you will get out tonight eventually, 6 to 8 points, and roughly £300 fine coming up, sorry to be the bearer of bad news man, but I tell it as it is, good luck dude, put on something warm!!

"Call me Dave"
Just bluff it out, say your insurance covers you, then get a good lawyer and never admit you were knowingly uninsured, My insurance covers me to drive your mates car if he agrees so there is a good chance no one will realise. Your mate will be prosecuted if he let you drive the motor uninsured either that or he will have to make out you never asked permission and it was Twoking, taking and driving away.

Summary of the Law

Failing subsequently to produce your driving licence, certificate of insurance or MOT certificate (if required) for inspection is an offence.

It can be a defence to produce the documents as soon as you can thereafter, if it was not possible for you to do so within the seven days.

If you do not produce a document it is likely that a summons will be sent alleging both a failure to produce the document and the relevant document offence itself. For example, if you fail to produce your insurance certificate, you can expect a summons alleging failing to produce and driving without insurance. The prosecutor will withdraw the charge of driving without insurance if you can produce your certificate, but the failing to produce charge will stay unless you have can show good reason why you did not produce the document.

Maximum Sentence

This offence can be dealt with only by the Magistrates Court. The maximum penalty is a fine of up to £1,000.

The Court has no power to disqualify for this offence or put penalty points on a driver’s licence. The fine tends to reflect the administrative complications that result when documents are not produced in good time.

Legal provision

s164, 165 Road Traffic Act 1988

If your fully comp you should be insured in your mates car, and you should just get a summons later

probably a fine and 3 points. it was stupid of you to be driving it, what would you have done if you killed some1.

Bandit600
You're screwed. It's better to admit guilt as it results in a lesser sentence. The fine's not more than £150, and up to nine points. Try and present your case as stupidity and take your own insure along "as you thought you were covered".
