No auto insurance for 4 years, now will I have to pay high premiums?

For the last 4 years, my car has been titled and Insured in my grandmother's name. I am going to buy a new car next week, but when I called for an insurance quote, the premiums were almost 3 times the amount I expected because I have had a period of time with no insurance in my name even though I owned no vehicle to insure. What can I do other than pay 230 a month for insurance? Can I add a car titled in my name under my name in my grandmother's policy if I live with her?

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

First of all, are you listed on your grandmother's policy as a driver for her car? If so, you should be able to get a policy in your name from the same company that she uses. The fact that you did not have a policy in your name would not be a factor, because you were insured under her policy.

For example, I am insured under a policy that is issued to my wife. I am listed as a driver. We did this because of the requirements of the company we are insured with, she was previously covered by them (years ago) on a policy owned by her parents! If I was to need a policy in my name for whatever reason, I could get it with no problem, because I have the previous coverage.

You may be able to be added to your grandmothers policy, and add the your car also. Check with her agent to see what can be done!

I am almost positive you are not paying that much because you haven't had insurance in your name for the past 4 years but because you are a younger person. The insurance on the other cars was inexpensive because you insured it as your grandmothers car and not yours. You can not add the car under your grandmothers name if it is titled in your name and being driven by you. Unfortuately, younger people are a higher risk and therefore and have to pay more in premiums.

well it is probably based on credit rather than not having insurance for 3 years. when i had my first car i never had to pay that much. you may want to get quotes from other insurance companies. or change your deductable amounts to lower the cost. also if you buy other insurance policies like renters insurance you will get a discount if its with the same company. also check with your employer, many companies get discounts on auto insurance

Well sooner or later you will have to get it in your name my friend,grams wont always be there!! No you can't add it to her insurance if it is titled in your name. You can put it in her name and list you as a driver, but you may as well go ahead and execpt the liability for your own policy. The rate will reduce after 1 year of a clean record. good luck !!
