About two days ago, I was driving in traffic. I had to push my brakes really quick to stop my car. I stopped really close to the vehicle in front of me. Because there were no bumps and I heard no scraping sounds, I assumed I did not hit the vehicle in front of me; that I only stopped within a couple of inches of it. The other driver did not react; they did not get out of their vehicle; which told me that they felt no bumps or heard any scraping sounds like two vehicles hitting. Therefore, I thought nothing of it and proceeded in traffic. Because I did not give it a second thought, I did not even think to check my car for any damage after that. Again, I just thought I had barely missed the other car. Well, about two days later I am putting air in my front tires and I notice a light scraping on my bumper where a few flakes of paint came off. Again, I thought nothing of it since my vehicle is old anyway and has some paint and body issues. Then, I remembered the incident about my stopping my car close to this other vehicle. I thought "OMG! What if I did actually hit the vehicle that was in front me a couple of days ago?" But, keep in mind, there were no noises, no vehicle bumps, and no driver reactions from either of us to indicate that I did hit anyone. Everyone proceeded through traffic like nothing had taken place. But, now I feel bad about it thinking that I unknowingly may have lightly scraped this vehicle; what should I do? Did I break the law? Was this a real hit and run? Of course, if anything comes of it, I just tell the truth; the same story I am posting here. Are there any police officers out there that have knowledge of this type of situation that can share with me? Serious responses are much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Relax, its probably nothing considering the other driver didn't react. Like you said, your cars old so that scrap was probably there from before. I don't think it's considered a hit and run, I mean the other driver didn't get out of his/her car and react so don't worry about that. And if your car has such a noticeable scrap than there would probably be a stronger impact and you had have felt your car bumping into the other car. |

My thoughts are that a couple of days have passed now, you have heard nothing, it may well be that the damage to your car was caused by someone else whilst it was parked and you just didn't notice it until now, so just sleep nights with a clear conscience!
If anyone had noted your car details (registration, color etc.) I feel sure you would have heard something by now.

I don't know if you hit the other car, I'm not psychic. The answer to your question, honestly, is..who cares? There's nothing you can do about it now. You have an old car with another flaw, no big deal. It might have been there already anyways. Quit being paranoid. |
