On buying a new car, should I get insurance for it immedliately?

I am buying a new car in a day or so. Am I legally required to get insurance before I take it out of the dealership? I heard that dealer should keep insurance for 1 month. Is that true?
If it is true, what is covered - just the car? Driver? Passengers?

You should have insurance all the time.... Normally everytime you buy a new car you always get some moron who will run into it... this has happened to me sooooooooooo many times. with the dealership it depends if you will be taking out a loan, if so then normally you must have insurance for a year.
normally the CTP covers the driver plus passengers and the insurance covers the car |

why would the auto dealers keep insurance on an auto they no longer own? of course you have to insure it. if you already have a policy, you have time to change out the autos on the policy, ususally 2 weeks. |

The dealer doesn't have to keep anything. Obviously, most people can't arrange for the insurance before they buy a vehicle, because often you don't know exactly what you're going to buy. If you already have insurance, you are covered but you have to arrange for insurance as soon as possible. Buy a car on a weekend or at night, insurance office is closed? Call them on Monday and take care of it. |

You only need insurance if you plan to drive it. No, the dealer doesn't insure your car (with the exception of the test drive). Call your agent from the dealership, he can fax over your insurance cards and you will be covered. |

I don't know about Texas, but in CT, you can't even leave the lot without a valid insurance card. |

When you buy that new car, take your ins info with you.
Just about all dealers are equipped so they can furnish the info about your new car to your ins co. Just takes a minute and is part of the service. The dealer is required to furnish the ins info to the state.
If it is a new purchase and you have no ins, chances are the dealer knows an agent who will be glad to issue a policy, and can have hin on the phone in a minute.
. but, no ins, don;t even think of driving it. |

If you already have insurance for another car (either one or both of liability/ collision), most insurance companies cover the new car for a month. So, you get a month to add the new car..but, you get charged from the day you bought the car.
To be sure, you may still want to confirm with the insurance company. |

Most dealers include 30 days of insurance with the price of the car. But you can't assume this. Ask the dealer and get the policy in writing. |
