Parking ticket in a rental car. Do I have to pay? What are the implications?
|
Quite simple...title says it all. I was out of town on personal business and I rented a car at the airport. While visiting a friend I let the meter lapse and came down about 10 or 15 minutes late, to find a ticket on my windshield. Will they track me down if I don't pay?

Duh!!!

I manage a rental company, and I have charged customers for parking tickets that they didn't take care of when they had the vehicle.
You can be tracked down: once we receive the ticket after the customer didn't take care of it, all we have to do is look up the history of the vehicle and track the date of the citation to the contract that was on rent at the time. We then go back into the contract and charge the customer's credit card for the ticket and any and all late fees. And sometimes the late penalties are double of what the ticket initially cost.
So to save yourself, just pay your ticket. |

Yes, they will probably contact the rental company and get your info. Best bet is to just pay it. |

Yes the insurance company will track you down. Happend to me when I didnt pay on time, and they contacted me right away. Your liscense is a privilidge, and your ins company tracks your tickets, and not taking responsibility no matter the ticket can cost you later when you go to renew or cancellation for not being someone they want to insure as someone whose being dishonest might be dishonest another time.
Its best to not even consider why pay it, or do the wrong thing, its more mature to just do what you know is right eh? Yes you will have problems down the road, all DMVs are tied in together at all times. They all see whats going on. An officer will not show up from that other state, but dont think that a no show is not more expensive than the tickets, no shows are hundreds in fines plus the original amount, plus the ins companys policies on that situation too. |

Of course they will track you down if you don't pay. You don't think the rental car company is going to pay your fine, do you ? |

Pay the ticket or the cops will track you down. You rented the car, you pay the tickets. |

You are responsible for anything while you have the car......the company didn't get the ticket and I'm sure they won't pay for it, they'll come after you. |

No, they won't track you down. Parking tickets are written to the vehicle, not to the driver. Just pay the ticket. If you don't the court will eventually contact the registered owner, which is the rental company, and they will pay the ticket, and bill the cost to your credit card. |

no,you can get as many tickets as you like .rental cars are exempt from traffic tickets. |

There is no such thing as a free lunch--and rental cars are NOT exempt from traffic tickets.
If you rent a car and receive a parking citation, the rental car company (as the registered owner of the vehicle) will likely pay the citation to avoid late fees and penalties but will charge your credit card for the cost of the citation plus an administrative/processing fee.
If you receive a moving violation/traffic citation, the citation is tied to your driver's license, and the issuing authority will come after you personally for payment of the fine and/or a court appearance. Depending on the terms and conditions set by the rental car company, they may also charge an administrative fee on your credit card to process your traffic citation. |
