Passed my driving test, but parents wont allow me to drive.?
|
i past my driving test about 14 months ago, when i was 17, and havent driven a car since. i am really hacked off because whilst i was learning, my parents insured me on one of their cars, but i soon as i passed, they refused to renew the insurance meaning i coodnt drive it. its not a question of money as i wood be willing to pay the insurance, yet they just wont allow me to drive.
they actually paid for me to actually learn to drive, which cost about £600, so i dont see why they just wont let me drive their car. i wood buy my own car but i struggle to get through uni as it is.
can anyone think why they are refusing to let me drive as their is no logic to it

hi i understand your confusion i was the same with my kids you will have to wait until u can afford your own vehicle im afraid so youll have to get over it and get your head down at uni then get a good job and perhaps then get into car ownership. youll be ok. both mine are now bsc hons and now have their own cars |

If you were 17 fourteen months ago, that means you are 18 now, which makes you an adult. As such you surely can get your own car, and your own insurance to drive it.
Perhaps the costs of having you on their insurance is more than they can afford, perhaps they dropped all their insurance and are driving illegally, I have no idea. But the only one who can answer is your parents, not a random group of strangers. |

they probably don't want you driving their car. Get your own. Buy a cheap wreck, get a p/t job to pay for it. They'll probably help you out if you struggle for money then. |

As a parent of 4 adult kids i would disagree, there is a lot of logic in it.
As an inexperienced driver and possibly subject to peer pressure why should they risk their car (which may be essential transport for them) in your hands? None of my 4 off spring were ever allowed to drive any of my cars. Pranging your parents car is guaranteed to cause a lot of hassle in the family! |

Shouldnt you be asking them this question |

cost of their insurance, or ask them this question, what you got to lose |

you should ask them, pehaps its because you are not yet 18 and insurance would have to be under their policy and a bit risky |

Hi
Your parents in a way are making the right desicion for you.
A) At 18 and totally inexperienced I would as a parent wouldnt allow you to drive my car.
b) at 18 it'll be more expensive to insure
However if you are truly dedicated to drive alone, buy a cheap car pref under 1.4 litre, small car cheap to insure, and drive. |

You will find that they do not want you to drive their car on your own. Its different when you are learning because they are with you & can take control at any time. Your parents know you best so its not like their just being selfish they have a good reason as to why they have decided this.
You have 3 options either get your own car, wait until your parents are ready to let you drive their car or ask to drive their car if their present with you ie like before on a lesson (obviously need insurance) to enable you to gain confidence on the road. |

Wait til you finish uni and buy your own car.
I don't blame them. |

What sensible parents you have. They are the people who know you best and they probably think you may need to mature a bit more.
I have been a driving instructor for over 20 years and very often as soon as a son/daughter becomes 17 Mum and Dad send their precious child for driving lessons (they also pay for them) On many of these occasions it is perfectly clear to me that they are not mature enough (I often wonder why it is not clear to their parents) Just because someone reaches the age of 17 does not make them ready to take on this responsibility particularly when they are not even mature or sensible enough to hold down a part-time job to contribute towards them.
Parents have a duty to their offspring and that includes not encouraging them to drive before they are ready.
My personal view is when a son or daughter is mature and focused enough to work to pay for their own tuition then they are usually mature enough to learn. (Mum and Dad can then use the money they saved on helping out with car purchase or insurance)
Sorry for the rant!!!!
P.S. my own son was not ready until he was 22 and had completed University |

Putting a learner on the insurance doesn't cost a lot extra as there is supervision. However a young qualified driver who might drive alone, or even worse with his mates, with no supervision is regarded with horror by the insurance companies. Very expensive and high risk of a crash |

You see thats bull because you have to drive a car at some point. Parents can be so stupid when it comes to this. If you let your kid get their license then you take on the responsibility that they are going to want to drive. I let my kids drive as soon as they got their license and i followed them with our other car, to make sure that they could handle it. I would rather that then them going out their buying some cheap stupid car that is going to put my kids life in danger, and then driving it on their own with no one to make sure that they can handle it. If i didnt want my kids to drive my car i would have had them learn how to drive in the first place. |

This is wrong , your parents should alow you to drive .This will put you underpressure and you will loose all your skills of driving , plus you will loose confidence in your self to drive .
They think that they are making right decision but its not for your benefit in long run honestly .They should not discourage you , because you will lose all lot of things if you dont drive .Specially jobs which requires driving . |
