Picking up car without road tax UK?
|
I am picking up a car with no road tax. I'm buying it today privately and it is quite a distance from where i live. It has no road tax. i can only get an insurance cover note which is a verbal agreement by phone. I can't get the tax without the insurance details on paper so what do i do cause i've got to get it home? UK some one any idea?

The chances of getting pulled over are pretty remote unless you do something silly.So stick to the speed limits and you should be fine driving it home.I can assure you there are plenty of untaxed cars on the road on a regular basis and they all get away with it. |

It is illegal to use public roads without road tax, that is the end of story. There are no excuses, if you are unlucky enough to get caught, i.e the car breaks down the old bill turn up, or you are involved in an accident etc. They won't accept your excuses, they will tell you that you should have waited until all the paperwork was sorted out. Sorry but you won't have a leg to stand on if you are caught. |

Do NOT drive an untaxed car on the roads of UK. If you are stopped by the police, you will have to pay a massive fine. While they're at it, the police will go over your newly purchased vehicle with a fine toothed comb to find out exactly what is wrong with it.
There are always lots of things 'wrong' with a car, especially a second hand one. Bald tyres, inefficient breaks, out of focus headlights, you name it.
You will get DONE if you drive untaxed. DO NOT DO IT. |

you can pay road tax in arrears, so just drive the damn thing as long you have insurance and a driving license you'll be fine |

Using ashypoo's quotes that he raised. If you book a new MOT in back home, and drive the car from your pick up point to the MOT station, get it MOT'd immediately, then drive it home, you will not be breaking any laws. |

Your only legal way of getting it home is to have it transported on a trailer |

You cannot legally drive on the road without tax. Its as simple as that.
Motor traders have trade plates that they can put on any vehicle for this reason.
If you decide to drive it be very careful as your insurance could be declared void as you have no tax.
Just be careful, don't set off any speed cameras and hope you don't get stopped if you must drive it.
Its a bloomin nightmare! |

DVLA's stand on the matter is this:
When can an untaxed vehicle be used on a public road?
An untaxed vehicle cannot be used or kept on a public road.
There is one exception:
You can drive an untaxed vehicle on a public road to and from a pre-arranged:
* MOT testing station
* VIC testing station
* an approved vehicle weight testing station which covers design weight certificate or plated revenue weight
* reduced pollution test
* provided that adequate insurance cover for your use of that vehicle is in place
So, strictly speaking, driving the vehicle home untaxed is illegal. Whether or not you want to take the chance is up to you, but bear in mind that unless the police that stop you feel friendly that day, they can prosecute. |

Taxing it online won't help, you must display the tax disk on the car, it's an absolute offence not to do so.
You might get away with it, but it only takes a slight bump or a passing policeman to spot you and you're in deep doo-doo. The only legal way to move it at present is on a trailer or truck.
To be legal, you'll have to wait until you've been able to obtain the tax disk I'm afraid. |

sorry but george is right ,i bought a car 3 months ago in uk and asked at police station and post office,there is no way it is legal you MUST get it taxed mot and insured before you drive it home you get caught and they will seize your car.that bis why second hand cars that are not taxed go for peanuts |

When you get the car, ensure you fill inn the V5c on transfer of ownership. It is number 5 on the log book. There you should fill in today's date saying that you have bought it. You can drive the car to your home address, but I would advise that you do not use it on a regular basis until you insurance has come through and you can get tax on it.
At least if the police stop you today, you will be able to show them that you have just picked the car up, and you have not been driving it.
Explain to them that you are merely taking it home until your insurance document comes through.
Hope this helps. |
