Possible to hire a car when you have just passed your test?

Hi,

I am planning to sit my practical driving test soon. A friend of mine who recently passed her test mentioned she cannot hire a car. I'm not really sure why. It is not related to age, she is over 21 so I suppose it is because she might not have insurance. Assuming this is the case, If I pass my test but don't actually have a car can I still apply for insurance? Or is there another reason new drivers cannot hire cars?

Ok, thank you Huw - you have provided me with the answer I was after. Thanks to everyone for the clarification, I appreciate the question was quite a basic one but I don't have much knowledge of the whole driving scene. I live in central london and don't intend to actually buy a car as the running costs and congestion charges are prohibitive. So I just wanted to be able to hire a car as and when required. I now understand the limitations. S

In UK the hire Companies demand at least a period of twelve months after you have passed your test. The thinking is that you will have got over the overconfident stage and had at least one fright of your life to calm you down

Hi Sounique, some companies will let you hire a car if you are 21 years of age. However, most will require that you have had your driving licence for a least one year, some require two years. You cannot use your own insurance with car hire companies, you have to use their insurance, hence the restriction.

No you have to pass your test for 2 years efore you can hire a car.

Some places are age 25!! But usually they ask you if you want to use there insurance you pay extra for it, so I don't think it was a insurance thing!! You can't get insurance if you don't have a car!!

In the UK it doesn't matter if you own a car.

Most hire companies say that you must have a:

- valid UK Drivers licence with 3 years

- Be over 25 (21 in some cases)

No it's not possible as you have no experience. They usually only hire out cars to people with a few years experience and I think over the age of 25. As for insurance why would you want to pay for this when you don't have a car? You can borrow a car as long as the other driver is insured for "any driver".

From what I have seen you have to be 25 yrs. of age with a credit card and you would have to purchase the Hires insurance. All companies have their little rules they have to follow. Call around to a few and see what their requirments are. Good luck.

It depends on the Hire companies insurance. As you don't have insurance of your own they might not lend. You can only get insurance for a car that is in your name. Or if you are driving, say your parents car, you will have to on their insurance as a named driver. You can't just get insurance to drive any car.

Dont borrow a mates car even if they have insurance for any driver, the any driver cover on there policy is based on you actually having your own insurance policy. Hire car companies always have there own insurance and when you hire a car you are insured to drive it straight away. Hire companies have restrictions on age, its best to ask, i guy i know is 19 and hires vans out fairly often, and he only passed his test 6 months ago, im guessing the hire firm pay very high insurance costs or he lied on the length of time he held a driving licence

some places do rent cars if you have had a licence under a year but sometimes charge more but nearly every car hire rents cars to people who are 25 and over and 1 year licence
