Ok I passed my test nearly 20 years ago and only drove about 6 times as my husband (now ex) shouted like a mad man at me from when I passed my test so I didn't drive. I got my new licence as paper one was lost and decided that it would be morally wrong for me to drive as I think I would be a danger to other road users so I have started lessons. Has anyone else ever been very nervous and did it pass, thank you Additional Details Thanks, I only told a few that I am having the lessons cause everyone was saying 'oh you'll be getting a car and on the road', I know that I would be a danger yes legally I could just go out and drive but to me it would be morally wrong as I think at the moment I would be a danger.

Yes, have some good lessons with a patient teacher. Then get someone that also drives, who you trust and feel relaxed around to take a drive out with you. Get lots of practice this way and then when you feel comfortable, take a drive out somewhere quiet on your own and just get used to driving around alone. If you passed your test and have taken refresher lessons, I'm sure you'll be fine. Just sounds like your idiot ex-husband knocked your confidence. Good luck- you'll be fine! |

That's very responsible of you Bernie
No need to be nervous, you passed once so you can get your confidence back again quickly
Talk to a few driving instructors before picking the one you learn with. Make sure you like them.
Good luck :) |

Of course you'd be nervous!!! I had a friend like you. Every person who tried to teach her how to drive turned her into a nervous wreck! The poor thing cried every time she got behind a wheel! So, as a dear friend, I took her out to the desert in my old, old, old, beat up P.O.S. car (piece of Shhhht) and told her to go for it. I didn't say a word except when she asked me a question. Who cares if she wrecked that thing? I bought it for $100. No big deal. So, practice makes perfect. I let her drive around, get comfortable and then when SHE felt ready, we drove on roads with other cars. She did fine (although we did have to pull over for a minute when she freaked out because a motorcycle screamed passed her and scared the pants off of her - and me too!). When she felt good with city streets, we braved the freeway.
One tip. Try taking St. Johns Wort (it's just a vitamin). It will help you a lot with your nerves and let you think more clearly. You'll do fine! |

Hi bernie, I had a very simular situation to you, I passed in 1986, and drove for a couple of years in London, then went back in the pub trade, and my ex used to do all the driving, so I didnt drive for about 16/17 years, anyway brought a car 4/5 years ago, because we were out in the sticks (cotswolds) and a member of staff took me out a few times untill I got my confidence back, I sent of my old licence for the new card one |

Everyone would be nervous in your position!
Just relax - don't get stressed - it is just another thing to learn and if you really don't like it - it won't be the end of the world if you decide not to bother!
Although I'm betting you will get to enjoy it and will wonder why you got so worried about it! |

It is a real shame you let him victimise you like that, but there it is, when we are unsure of ourselves, we sometimes let it happen.
In 20 years the roads and driving are so so different. You would need a refresher course I think. My son is a driving instructor, he has his own business and he said there is a lot of extra things to pass these days, like the oral test and pre-test and the driving test itself. So it won't be too easy.
However, I believe you will pass again if you put your mind to it. If you have to pass again. I don't know. Your old licence must be registered somewhere.
Go for it girl, you can do it, think of the advantages of being able to be independent. Lots of situations need you to be able to drive. Like visiting hospitals. It is a useful commodity. |

Most people get nervous on a test at first but you settle down at least you don't have to pass a test. I taught my mum to drive as she got her license before there were tests and renewed during the war but she had not driven for well over 30 years and then it was a Model T Ford and it was brand new. |

Relax Bernie, your nervousness stems from your husbands boorishness not from your ability. You passed you test. That's proof you were competent. All you have to do is get rid of his negativity that's doing your head in.Chill Bernie, you go stick it to him sunshine. It'll feel goooood!
Way to go you, by the way. |
