Producing car documents at police station?

At the moment, you have made an error, and if you go to the police station and produce the documents they may accept them..
if you do not produce the documents, that is an offence in itself.

Without a doubt make sure you produce and explain the fact you misunderstood. You can hope that the receiving officer gives you the benefit of the doubt but the consequences are worse for failing to produce.
Should you be unfortunate to be advised that you are to be charged and issued with a NIP (notice of intended prosecution) . Make sure the words are the words as deviation renders them invalid.
The Caution
"You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention now something you later rely on in court, Anything you do say may be given in evidence", or:
The verbal NIP
"You will be reported for consideration of the question of prosecuting you for this offence."
Your Response should be
â€œI do not recognise the significance of those words and I would like to exercise my legal right to refer to PACE â€“ The Police and Criminal Evidence Act.â€
They will then have to go find a copy and may not leave until you are satisfied with the contents of this very thick book. It is an extremely complicated book and I suspect that they will prefer to give you a warning, particularly if your documents were in order and the fault on the car has been rectified.
NB: Make sure you do not give the reply until AFTER the caution or NIP

years ago when i had an old banger, i was stopped for a faulty tyre. but i had no mot. i did not produce. and i never heard any more of it..i asked a policewoman friend about this ..years after the fact, and she said they do not have time to check them all.

Go to the police station with your documents to prove you aren't trying to avoid it. Admit ignorance and you probably just get a ticking off. If the issuing officer was doing their job right you would have had a ticket for failing to produce by now.

Go and prove that you are covered! if not they will have you for driving without an MOT, papers etc... When it comes to stuff like that, the police can get nasty....... and who could you turn to? no-one and they know that.
2 years ago they stopped a friend of mine, gave him 7 days to show them down the station, he forgot and then they charged him for driving without any documentation. He was fined Â£400 plus points in his licence!! Don't risk it...... go now, now, now run!!!

Admit being a bit daft (they'll probably just have a minor grumble then a laugh at your expense, if that) otherwise it could backfire and crop up at a later date with more penalties.

Better to look a bit silly now than risk a bigger fine or court appearance later.

I would still attempt to produce them at the police station. You can explain that you thought you had 14 days. If you do nothing you're likely to get charged with not producing your documents AND driving without insurance (even though you have it - without producing the certificate, you can't prove you have it).

This happened to me. I had lost my insurance certificate and asked my insurance company for a replacement which never came through. I got court papers for the two charges, but I got a letter from my insurance to prove that at the time I was stopped I did have insurance so the charge of driving without insurance was proved not guilty but I was found guilty of not producing documents and was fined Â£70 and given 3 points on my licence. So my story should tell you to produce your documents even if you are late.

i would still produce cause thell have you in court if you dont on the grounds of no insurancce and so on
