I'm 17 and going for my driver's test. My parents said that they were going to put my name under all three cars we own for insurance. That didn't make sense to me though. When I went to All State's website, and did an estimated quote, it would only let me pick one car for each person. Like just one primary driver for each car. My question is, how does this insurance thing work?

You would be considered at least a secondary driver on any cars your parents own. You would only be a primary driver on a car that you drove for a larger percentage of the time than either of them. |

That is how State Farm does it and then bases the rate on each driver/car combination. I ve had State Farm for over 30 years and that is how they have always done it.
You need to get your insurance through your parents policy as it will be about ten times more expensive to buy on your own. This means that who ever your parents have as an insurance carrier is the one you need to use too.
How it works is your parents will have what is called an insurance rider added to their policy which adds you. So what you are paying for is the cost of that rider.

No idea how your specific private insurance works, but here you can only have one PRINCIPAL driver. Here, there is a discount for drivers with over 10 years of experience if none of the drivers have less then that. Chances are, they're either waiving that discount for you (my parents did it for me) or they'll add you to a list of authorized drivers under their policy. |

insurance policies are all different. Usually, though, an insurance policy requires you to declare if certain people are going to also be regular drivers, SPECIFICALLY 17 year olds. Sometimes insurance companies can require this or they can revoke your parents' policy for a failure to disclose. Your parents just want to make sure that you're covered in all the cars, so you can drive any of them without insurance problems. |
