must I keep the original document on me or can I just hold a photocopy and keep the original stowed away. someone told me that since my name is on it maybe I must keep the original on me

It seems that the States & Cities differ in the way they handle this sort of thing. It amounts to the amount of money they can get you on the ticket. Sound cynical? It is and I am. A while back in this state NY State the Motor vehicles changed the look and how to apply the registration sticker on your windshield. The DMV stated on there web site (At that time) That you could make a photo copy and leave the original at home and carry the photo. Well, the Police didn't like that and long story short. They ticket you now for that. It amounts to whether the cop is literally in a good or bad mood. I would carry It. Have It available. The original reason you would NOT want to leave It in the car was that back prior to 1972, the vehicle was transferred by using the original registration. It wasn't required that you use the title only. Now that the registration is technically "Just a Piece of Paper", instead of the only transferable paper, It no longer is a necessity to carry It. Again, I would always have It on my person (Being a Man, I have a wallet to carry It in) If the cop wants you, he will use anything and Lie. Sorry for the long,long explanation. Sometimes It requires a long winded answer ;) Just have It available. Keep It in the glove box. It is of no use to anyone but the owner of the car |
