Question about obtaining learner's permit?
Find answers to your legal question.

Question about obtaining learner's permit?

In Pennsylvania, does it matter if you have your real birth certificate or just a copy of it to get your learner's permit?

I moved two years ago, and my birth certificate got lost in the move. My 16th birthday was in April, and we ordered a new birth certificate from the state around that time, but it hasn't come yet (it's been two months). We do have a copy of my birth certificate, and I have my physical form and social security card. Thanks.
Additional Details
I've got the raised seal on my birth certificate and my birth certificate copy, is that ok?

No, a copy will NOT work. See site below for full details. This is what the Pennsylvania DMV site below (back of form) says you have to have:

To meet identification requirements you MUST present the following:

Social Security Card (card cannot be laminated) and one of the following:

• Birth Certificate with raised seal (U.S. issued by an authorized government agency, including U.S. territories or Puerto Rico. Non-U.S. Birth Certificates will not be accepted)
• Certificate of U.S. Citizenship (BCIS/INS Form N-560)
• Certificate of Naturalization (BCIS/INS Form N-550 or N-570)
• Valid U.S. Passport

NOTE: Only valid U.S. Passports and original documents will be accepted.

♦ If you have an Out-of-State Driver's License, you should present it along with your Social Security Card and one of the above forms.

Yes, if you have a "certified copy" of your birth certificate, that's fine. It would have a raised seal.

Since the passage of the REAL ID Act, the majority of the states in the U.S. require an original birth certificate or a certified copy of the original, meaning the copy has to have a raised seal. If your copy has a raised seal it means it's a certified copy and just as good as the original that was issued when you were born.
